This is more than a finished notebook. Make it with your own hands, record your day, and observe the waves of your mind.

Begin
00 / BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Before you begin

This is more than a diary. It is a journal for recording your day and observing the waves of your mind. It is meant to be made by your own hands.

Handle the materials and bring something into being yourself. The time you spend making it is part of the SUIGETU JOURNAL experience.

01 / MAKE

MAKE YOUR JOURNAL

Make it your own.

Take your time and work through each step. Follow the instructions at your own pace.

01

Gather your materials

Gather the kit materials, the journal-page PDF, printed pages, scissors, a ruler, a pencil, a hole-punching tool, starch paste, and scrap paper to protect your work surface. Protect the surface and work carefully when making holes.

Print the PDF at its intended size. If your print dialog offers “Actual Size” or a similar option, choose a setting that does not resize the page.

02

Layer the washi cover

Layer the washi paper and join the sheets with a thin application of starch paste. Gently smooth the surface and let it dry completely on a flat surface. Too much paste may cause the paper to buckle.

The marks left by your hands are part of the journal. It does not need to be perfect.

03

Prepare the journal pages

Print the PDF and check the page order. Confirm that every page faces the right way before stacking the pages and aligning them with the cover.

The printed sheets become the journal’s inner pages. The feel of the finished journal will vary with your printer settings and paper choice.

04

Punch and bind with cord

Align the cover and pages. If your kit includes a template or binding diagram, use it to mark the hole positions. Make the holes, then thread the cord through them to bind the pages and cover. Finally, check that the journal opens and closes comfortably.

Follow the kit’s binding diagram for the exact number and placement of holes and the cord path, if one is provided. This web guide does not prescribe a specific hole layout.

05

Begin with your own journal

Check that the cover, pages, and cord sit together comfortably. Small irregularities and handmade marks are part of what you have made.

02 / MATERIALS

Working with materials

Washi

Notice the texture and character of the fibers as you make the cover.

Starch paste

Use a small amount in a thin layer. Avoid moving the paper around too much before the paste dries, and let it dry flat.

紐 Cord

Use the cord to bring the cover and pages together. Do not pull it too tight; leave enough room for the pages to open.

03 / USE

A DAILY PRACTICE

Record your day. Observe your mind.

The center line is not a clock.

The center line represents the flow of your day. Rather than following the time on a clock, pay attention to the rhythm of the day as you experienced it. You do not need to write exact times.

Intentions on the left. Actions on the right.

Write what you want to do on the left, and what you did on the right. Place each entry along the flow of your day.

At day’s end, draw the waves of your mind.

Let the center line represent stillness. From there, draw the movement of your mind in one continuous stroke, extending to either side. Calm, busy, unsettled, joyful, low—give shape to what you felt.

Small feelings may stay close to the center.

Strong feelings may extend farther out.

There is no correct shape.

Having waves is not a bad thing.

04 / REFLECT

Simply observe who you were that day.

By observing yourself, you can come to know who you are today. Today’s record becomes a clue for your future self to understand who you were.

The line at the bottom of the page is a place to put today’s self into words. How did you live today? How do you want to live tomorrow?

It is all right to forget. It is all right to leave a day blank. Choosing not to write is also part of how you lived that day.

THE PHILOSOPHY OF SUIGETU

Waves move across the water.
Still, the moon is reflected.

Do not try to eliminate the waves. Learn to see the water, even when it is moving.

Perhaps what is wavering is the surface, not the whole of who you are.

Keep feeling. Learn to observe what you feel with clarity. From there, you may notice beauty and create something beautiful.

Move with time, not against it.
